Shipping a sea container full of onions from the Netherlands to Brazil is cheaper than sending a truck full of onions to the south of France. This is due to the fact that the distances between the cultivation areas, the onion processing packing centres and the Dutch ports are short and empty containers have to return to the country of origin.

Since more freight is coming our way than vice versa, the logistical costs for return freight are low. Transport from the grower to the packing centre and from the packager to the port costs in the Netherlands around 1,5 euro cent per kilogram. In France for example these transport costs can easily be five times as high and in the United States the transportation of onions from the cultivation areas to the coast per truck or train is almost unaffordable compared to the Dutch transport costs. There is no country in the world capable of transporting its onions from the producer to the port at a lower price than the Netherlands. 

More export of the Holland Onion to an increased number of destinations, automatically means further logistic growth. And with an increase in volume comes an increase in the effectiveness of deploying containers. Three-quarters of the export of Dutch onions is currently delivered outside of the European borders. 

By efficiently re-using empty containers through the so-called barge concept, thousands of (metric) tons of CO2 emissions are avoided. This is approximately 65% less compared to past situations. Furthermore the Holland Onion Association is taking millions of truck kilometres of the road. Add up the time advantage for the waiting and customs clearance and we have yet again come across a number of unique key properties of the Holland onion.
