For every newsletter we publish a new videoclip on our HOA YouTube channel. Our video ‘tailor-made packaging’ demonstrates the versatility of the packaging options of our Dutch quality onions. No other country in the world is capable of supplying such a diversity of custom-made packaging with such short delivery times. The Dutch onion chain can realize any packaging requirement fast and efficiently. Paper, net or foil packaging, crates, trays or bins. Anything is possible. Relevant to the choice of the primary packaging material is the fact that the onions must be able to ‘breathe’ for perfect preservation during the transport to their (final) destination. And of course in the Netherlands we try to use packaging materials that have less impact on the environment and that can be recycled. The amount of packaging in proportion to the product is minimal and so it is quite sustainable. After all the onion is preserving itself with its firm blonde skin.

The most popular packaging is the both decorative and solid net packaging or girsac made of the recyclable polypropylene. It is available in every color of the rainbow. For small packages from 500 gram to large packages from 25 kilogram. Small packages can then be supplied in carton boxes or folding crates. Or they can be turned into bales of 10 or 20 kilograms for transport.

Small net packaging comes in different types. A loose net, rod-shaped packaging, clip-to-clip, even a carry bag. Optionally with a tailor-made printed label. While closing the retail packaging, they are fitted with a private label printed wine glass label or regular labels. By default these indicate the supplier, producer, Global Gap number (GGN), plot number, country of origin, class and sorting.

The knitted or woven net packaging is also quite suitable for large packages up to 25 kilograms. Large packages can also be carried out as private bags with their own label. Furthermore cardboard octabins or well ventilated big bags can be filled up to 1.200 kilogram. So that the final packaging can take place in the country of arrival.

After the primary packaging the large packages are fully automatically palletized. The strictly chosen pallet patterns make for a stable pallet load that can easily withstand any type of transportation to its final destination.
