on our way to planet proof

We are convinced that the Holland Onion Association scores favorably when it comes to our total ecological footprint compared to other onion exporting countries or domestic production. Because we don’t want to simply put any CO² label on our Holland Onion, the sector is looking comprehensively at the total impact of the journey from seed to consumer. This means that we are not just looking at the impact of the means of production and transportation that are being used, but also the really necessary quantities of pesticides.

Total ecological footprint
We use a lot less water per kilogram of product and fewer pesticides per hectare than for example India or Spain, while the yields are high and the tare losses are small. So we are bold enough to develop a footprint monitor since we believe this will give us another unique selling point.

Sustainable production will play a more prominent role in the coming years when selling the Holland Onion. And it should, if we want to produce optimally with a limited amount of agricultural area and thus spare primeval forest and fight desertification. And this will not only be the case for Europe but for the rest of the world as well. The Dutch onion chain has taken some significant steps in that regard from which the rest of the world can learn. This coming year we are working hard to calculate our footprint per kilogram of Holland Onions so that we can compare this information with other export players and of course compare the data against each other. After all, some companies are higher on the sustainability ladder than others.

Heronion
The results of all that hard work regarding sustainability, quality and our social responsibility will be widely shared and publicized in the coming years. As herald of the Holland Onion Association we have given our national export hero an own identity. We would like to hereby introduce you to the Heronion. You will be hearing from him often via various channels!
