new videoclip - healthy taste buddy

For every newsletter we publish a new videoclip on our HOA YouTube channel. In our latest video ‘healthy taste buddy’, we pay tribute to our golden-yellow and purple-red gems of the Dutch soil. We highlight the diversity, the flavour boost, the high-fibre nutritional value and the nutrient density of the Dutch onion. For large groups of the world's population, onions are a primary necessity for life. Their spicy taste flavours many dishes all over the world.

The Dutch onion is world famous. The unique, dry-matter content, the crispy freshness and the healthy firmness make the Dutch onion an essential taste maker. The beautiful, white interior of the golden-yellow Dutch onion is a glistening pearl in any dish.

Sweating
Almost every cooking recipe starts with the step ‘Sweat an onion…'. That's because sweating unlocks the unique flavours and aromas. The Dutch, golden-yellow onion is a natural flavour bomb with an extremely varied and spicy flavour. The red onion has a slightly milder flavour and is vibrant purple to its core. The pink variety is the ultimate combination of the best of both basic colours.

Key ingredient
Clearly, no professional kitchen can do without the Holland Onion. After all, the Dutch onion can be used in any season and in any climate. All year round, pantries are stocked with onions and are replenished almost daily. As a key ingredient in nearly every dish on the menu, onions are simply indispensable and have been for centuries and in ever changing ways. They’re a great way to add extra flavour to a variety of dishes. The Holland Onion is also a wonderful option if we want to minimise salt in our daily diet, as the WHO recommends.

Finishing touch
The Holland Onion is also immensely popular with home cooks. Onions are used daily in many homes, although in smaller quantities in the Netherlands than in some other countries. Apart from in the traditional Dutch ‘hachée’ and stews, they are mainly used as an ingredient to brighten up a dish and so you can find them in various salads in which this colourful seasoning makes all the difference. The average consumption of onions in the Netherlands is just around 7 kilograms per person per year. In the rest of Europe, the average is between 6 and 9 kilos per capita, while in Africa the consumption reaches nearly 40 kilos! Worldwide, the average consumption per person is 12 kilos and this number is increasing yearly. Partly because population is increasing especially rapidly in areas where onion consumption is high and partly because other cuisines are starting to appreciate onions more. It's expected that the average consumption will be over 15 kilos in 2050 and that, with 10 billion mouths to feed, the world-wide production must grow by 60%.

You can perfectly cook, stew or fry Holland Onions and they complement each dish, soups and sauce. You can also sauté, grill, caramelize or roast them and use them as a delicious side dish. All nature and finely chopped, they're the all-important finishing touch to the universally just as popular hotdog.

High dry-matter content
The Dutch onion has a high dry-matter content of approximately 11%, which can vary by variety. The dry matter gives a widely appreciated, high-fibre and crispy texture and makes the onion a beautiful product with a firm structure that is perfect for frying. On top of that, the Dutch calcium-rich marine clay soils and the temperate maritime climate result in an extremely healthy taste maker.

But the most important thing is the huge taste boost that Dutch onions can give, like no other onion. Our Dutch haring simply can't do without them...
