Saving and keeping something is timeless and a familiar phenomenon that has been around for centuries. The oldest piggy banks found in the Netherlands even date from the 14th century and, strangely enough, were all onion-shaped!

In today's fast-paced world, the concept of saving something for later may have taken a back seat. But the timeless wisdom of ‘saving something, is gaining something’ applies more than ever this onion export season.

With a much lower harvest volume everywhere in Europe, Dutch onion growers have been able to do very good business this season. Strongly rising prices in a scarce onion market, in combination with a carefully kept onion stock, created plenty of tension and the sensation that the Dutch onion trade could write more than half a billion export turnover in the books for the first time in history.

And then of course there was the ever-present dust… That heroic dust at picking up and storing the new crop of Holland Onions, in a tightly executed military operation.
