top yields and a perfect skin

The sown onion acreage in the Netherlands has increased yet again in the past growing season with almost 5% and now measures nearly 26,000 ha in total. However, with average yields expected to be slightly less than usual the total gross Holland Onion production is estimated to be 4% lower this season compared to last season at around 1,39 million ton kilogram. For comparison; in 2015 the total was 1,37 million ton and in 2014 it was 1,22 million ton. The yields per hectare are provisionally estimated to be 55,5 gross tons per hectare, against 57,4 ton/ha last year.

If we take a look at the beginning of the registrations in 1881 it clearly shows the explosive growth of acreage over the course of the past 135 years: from ‘just’ 2,819 ha devoted to the Holland Onion in 1881 compared to 26,000 hectare in the year 2016.

The weather conditions during harvesting could not have been any better this year. With a long period of dry and warm weather the harvesting conditions were optimal this season. Of course there was question of a very intermittent growing season which started off with a dry and cold spring, followed by a warm, yet very wet summer. The beautiful fall made up for a lot, even though every batch of course needs its own proper care.

The overall crop this season is of an outstanding quality: beautiful, large and round onions with a perfect skin, a magnificent color and excellent firmness. So based on that Holland Onions are as versatile as ever!
