export Holland Onions walking up to a new peak

The export record we achieved last season could be smashed as early as next year. In the first 19 weeks we exported almost 13% more than in the same period last season ! Weeks of more than 30,000 ton are no longer the exception to the rule. It is worth noting that the export to Indonesia has almost doubled compared to last season. In fact all countries, among them of course Senegal and Ivory Coast, show a striking increase. Even traditional European domestic markets like the United Kingdom, Belgium and France are up compared to last season. Great-Britain is even approximating the pre-war export data of this country.

Countries such as the Philippines with a steady growing economy of 5% per year contribute heavily to the export boost. The export to the Philippines increased with no less than 60% and the export to Nicaragua even doubled totaling 9,700 ton. Known, long haul destinations like the island nations Haiti (with an increase of 30%) and the Dominican Republic are even supplied on a weekly basis this season. Panama, which HOA has visited this season, greatly appreciates Holland Onions as well and has already purchased 7,800 ton.

But new exotic destinations also pop up more and more frequently on the Holland Onions dashboard, such as the Bahamas, the Maldives, the tropical islands Reunion and Martinique and the very tempting sounding Saint Lucia. All new tropical paradises where we will be shipping our Holland Onions to this year.

Also new on the list is Vietnam, with a population of around 90 million people. Together with countries such as Mongolia and El Salvador these are very promising new destinations. We are also working hard together with the Ministry of Economic Affairs to open up further new markets, such as Colombia, Costa Rica and eventually China.

When it comes to demand the world is welcoming the Holland Onion! Still the enterprising Dutch onion sector needs to stay alert. Especially in the second half of the season new markets are welcome!
