After shaking off the Spanish rule and bursting through their naval blockades the renowned Dutch commercial spirit starts blossoming around 1590. The results are well-known. The Dutch expanded their merchant fleet to an unparalleled size and in the time frame of a few decades the Dutch merchants acquired a substantial part of the global trade.

But what truly put our merchants in a league of their own in Europe back then, was a strong urge to innovate. They established low freight rates for the transport of bulk goods as early as the beginning of the 16th century. They did so by introducing entirely new vessel concepts, while also reinvesting the florins earned in the accessibility of the hinterland.

With the explosive growth of the international trade came an increase in ancillary services and a high-grade manufacturing sector. With a quick respond to changing circumstances, by enforcing changes when necessary and a constant look-out for savings. But also with tolerance, respect and sympathetic collaborations in the back of our mind because the customer is king. That was and is the Dutch commercial spirit at its best.
