Here in the Netherlands we sometimes say: Shiny packaging but a poor content. This is our level-headed way of saying that the wrapping is covering up the lack of of the product. Fortunately quite the opposite can be said about our Holland Onion. Our onion needs very little packaging and doesn’t require any frills or embellishments. Indeed, a Holland Onion can surely sell itself

By nature this Dutch bulb vegetable consist of a number of thickened rings, also called scales. The outer scales dry out and turn into a parchment-like strong skin, while the inner scales remain crisp and fleshy. Thus the most widely consumed vegetable crop in the world is protected in a completely natural manner against dehydration and fungal diseases, bacteria and other unwanted invaders. Plus, these renowned Dutch onion 'skirts' give our Holland Onion its crispy and fresh appearance that is recognized all over the world.

This perfectly healthy and firm wrapping of our Holland Onion of course did not just develop by itself. It’s the result of decades of targeted research addressing defensibility and functional agricultural biodiversity of our Dutch archetypal onion, the long-day Rijnsburger variety.
